Watermelon Kārums Curd Snack Supports Children and Animals: €8,847 Donated in Less Than Three Months

The beloved Latvian treat – the Kārums curd snack – has brought together the dreams of children, an Oscar-winning animation Flow, and the power of giving back. In just under three months (from late April to the end of June), Kārums has raised €8,847.02 from sales of its limited-edition watermelon-flavored snack, now being donated in equal parts to the Children’s Hospital’s canine therapy program Ķepu terapija and Remi Cat Assistance Centre – €4,423.51 each. And that’s not all – the watermelon snack has now flowed beyond Latvia, reaching Estonia, Lithuania, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Canada, Bulgaria, and Malta.

In collaboration with the creators of the internationally acclaimed animated short film FlowFood Union Latvia developed a unique watermelon-flavored Kārums curd snack. This flavor wasn’t just randomly picked – it came from the dreams and tastebuds of more than 5,000 Latvian children whose ideas were collected during Food Union’s Latvia Milk Class school tours. Among all the flavor ideas shared, watermelon stood out as the absolute favorite.

But this is more than just a delicious snack – with every bar sold, we’re making a difference. Based on donation agreements with the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Remi Cat Centre, Food Union Latvia will donate a fixed portion of sales revenue from this product every quarter. For the first quarter – covering April through June – that total is €4,423.51 per organization. (Production of the watermelon bar began in late April.)

Helping paws and purring hearts

The canine therapy program Ķepu terapija by the Children’s Hospital Foundation provides emotional and physical support to children undergoing medical treatment – with the help of specially trained dogs. Each session is tailored to a young patient’s individual needs, and the results have won the hearts of families and medical staff alike. Liene Dambiņa, Head of the Children’s Hospital Foundation: “We’re truly thrilled that this creative idea – a Kārums snack inspired by both kids and the heartwarming film ‘Flow’ — is now helping children in real life. Paw Therapy is so much more than just a cute meeting with a dog. It helps children overcome fear, open up, and begin their journey toward healing. Thank you to everyone helping bring joy and strength to young patients!”

Meanwhile, Remi Cat Assistance Centre is a volunteer-led animal rescue organization that cares for stray cats – providing medical treatment, temporary shelter, and helping them find loving homes. They also support the pets of vulnerable members of society by offering free veterinary care where possible. More info: www.remicentrs.lv.

Laura Podžuka, Remi Centre Representative: “Our heartfelt thanks to Kārums, Food Union, and the Flow team for their generous support and belief in our mission. This donation makes a real impact — not only helping stray cats but also the pets of those who need help the most. We’re touched that this initiative brings together childhood dreams, creativity, and compassion. It’s a beautiful story of friendship and responsibility.”

A Watermelon-Flavoured Story of Friendship and Giving

Kārums has always stood for joy, warmth, and family values. But this watermelon-flavoured curd snack is more than a treat – it’s the fulfilment of children’s wishes and a story of friendship, echoing the heart of the film Flow. We’re proud that each bite helps children and animals alike,” says Ilva Veidemane, Head of Marketing at Food Union Latvia.

This feel-good initiative will continue through spring 2026, supporting chosen charities across Latvia.
